Michael Courtland loses his wife and daughter in a failed kidnapping rescue, a wound that hollows him for years. In Italy, he meets Sandra Portinari, her face an uncanny echo of what he lost. What begins as recognition hardens into obsession as De Palma methodically exposes how desire can distort memory, and how the past refuses to stay buried.
